On May 19 the Chilean Senate finally approved the adhesion to the Madrid Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement concerning the International Registrarion of Marks. Therefore, Chile has taken an important step forward in the process to join the International Trademark System, which allows the registration and extension of international trademarks in this country. Before being effective, Chile’s accession document needs to be received by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
With the adhesion of Chile to the System, international trademark holders may extend the protection of their distinctive signs to one of the main markets in Latin America and a great innovation center. It is a good time to review the trademark strategy in the area and study the protection opportunities in this new scenario, for which we recommend expert advice.
Chilean brand owners will also benefit from greater convenience and lower costs when protecting their brands through one application, in one language, and paying one set of fees in 124 other countries.
