Uruguay joins the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms

August 9, 2024

The Uruguayan Parliament has approved the country’s accession to the 1977 Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure, following a proposal by the Executive branch. This is good news for the scientific community, as it provides Uruguay with a standardized regulatory framework that enhances the protection and international recognition of microorganism deposits, while promoting cooperation and innovation in the field of biotechnology.

Some of the benefits of the treaty include:

  • Promotion of international patent protection. The 89 countries that are part of the treaty can use recognized microorganism deposits for international patent applications. This simplifies the process for inventors by allowing a single deposit to be recognized in multiple jurisdictions.
  • International recognition and standards. The treaty establishes standards for the deposit and preservation of microorganisms, ensuring that these processes are carried out in a unified and reliable manner across all member countries. This contributes to the quality and integrity of the deposited microorganisms.
  • Improved access to technical information: Institutions and companies in member countries have access to an international database of deposited microorganisms, which facilitates research and the development of new technologies.
  • Efficiency and simplicity. By standardizing the deposit process, costs and complexity are reduced.
  • Promotion of innovation. he treaty provides greater legal certainty, which can encourage investment in R&D by ensuring that inventions are effectively protected in different jurisdictions.
  • Improved international cooperation. The Budapest Treaty promotes cooperation between countries in the fields of biotechnology and intellectual property, leading to more effective global knowledge and resource exchange.
